Can God speak through Siri? Well, He spoke through a donkey, so I suppose it’s possible.
I used to get so frustrated with Siri until I saw a documentary about the woman who did the voice. I had assumed Siri was a computer generated speech program of some sort. After that, I felt guilty for the things I said to her—like calling her an idiot and a few other choice things. But the other day, I had an experience that endeared Siri to me for life.
I was in the throes of my morning prayers. Some days that is a quiet affair, rather boring and unemotional, but this particular morning I was bathing in the presence of God. I love that! God is always there, but sometimes it’s hard for us to sense His presence.
I was really feeling it that day. Gratitude for God’s goodness and His grace was overflowing. All I could say was thank you Jesus! Thank you Jesus! Thank you Jesus! Thank you Jesus! Over and over again.
Suddenly that familiar voice spoke out of the phone lying on the table next to me. What was weird was I didn’t say the magic words: Hey Siri. Not saying there isn’t a logical explanation for that, but however it happened it got the point across.
So in her stilted voice Siri said:
It’s my pleasure.
Where did that come from? I was taken aback for a moment, then I began to laugh. I laughed and laughed and started thanking Jesus again. The voice might have been Siri’s, but it was God that was speaking to my heart.
It’s My pleasure.
When I was a young mother, I read everything I could find about parenting. I wanted to be a good mother, but I wasn’t always sure what that looked like. One of the best tidbits of wisdom I found was actually from a father who gave his children this assurance:
I’ll always say yes unless I have to say no.
That was a profound statement if you think about it. The opposite is, I’ll always say no unless you can convince me to say yes. If you beg long enough or work hard enough or prove yourself worthy enough, THEN I’ll say yes.
Unfortunately, that’s the way many people perceive God. A father with a predisposition to say no. To make us earn our own way. To be self-sufficient. And when we just can’t do it and we fail? A father who is always disappointed in us.
It’s God’s pleasure to bless us. He longs to bless us.
There’s just one thing God requires of us. That we believe. I can feel some of you slumping low in your chair saying, “I knew there was a catch. I’ve tried to believe but I just can’t. Why is that? What hinders us from believing? Could it be that we don’t know God well enough to trust Him? It’s not an easy question.
Hebrews 11:6 But without faith no one can please God. We must believe that God is real and he rewards everyone who searches for him.
Do you believe He’s real?
Do you believe He rewards everyone who searches for Him?
The scripture didn’t say you had to do anything. Just believe He is, and believe He will not turn you down if you look for Him. That’s all you have to do.
God wants to bless us. He wants to say yes. All He asks is that we believe that He loves us and has our interest at heart.
Luke 12:32 Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
This is God’s true nature. To bless. To give. To love.
